National Children’s Dental Health Month
In 1941, a program dedicated to the awareness of children’s dental health began in Akron, Ohio as a one-day event. In 1981, the American Dental Association (ADA) began sponsorship of the event and expanded it into a month-long campaign, now known as National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) that helps dental professionals, teachers, and other community leaders promote oral health awareness for children. Although February is the month of focus for the campaign, events and programs are held throughout the year to help children understand the importance of protecting their smile.
Give Kids a Smile Day, a program that the ADA began in 2003, is a way for dental care professionals to provide their services to underprivileged children in the community. The Give Kids a Smile program reaches more than 450,000 children each year, thanks to more than 15,000 events across the country and the help of 40,000 volunteers.
These dental health programs can help teach your children about the importance of proper dental care and make it fun and exciting all year long.

Teaching Children Good Dental Care Habits
You can begin familiarizing your child with daily dental care before they get their first tooth. Wipe your baby’s gums with a soft cloth after feeding. When your child is a little older, wrap a soft cloth around your finger and “brush” your child’s gums. You can help your child pick out their first toothbrush and toothpaste and teach them how to brush when they have at least four teeth. When your child has two side-by-side teeth, you can teach them the routine of daily flossing by gently running a floss pick between the two teeth.
If you make your children a part of the experience, you can keep them excited about their daily dental care routine. Allow them to select their own toothbrush, making sure they choose a child’s soft-bristled toothbrush in their favorite color or adorned with their favorite character, and let them choose a toothpaste in a flavor they love.
